NordVPN Review 2026: Is It Still the Best VPN?
NordVPN has been the default VPN recommendation on most review sites for years. But is that reputation still deserved in 2026, or are competitors like Surfshark closing the gap? We have been using NordVPN daily for over six months to find out.
This is not a surface-level review. We tested NordVPN across four devices, six server regions, and dozens of streaming platforms. We examined their privacy claims, verified their audit results, stress-tested the kill switch, and compared performance against every major competitor. Here is the full picture.
For how NordVPN stacks up against the competition, see our Best VPNs 2026 Comparison.
Quick Verdict
NordVPN remains one of the top two VPNs available in 2026. It is the fastest VPN we have tested, has a verified no-logs policy backed by two Deloitte audits, and its Threat Protection Pro feature is genuinely useful. The only reason it is not an automatic number one is that Surfshark offers nearly the same core features at a significantly lower price with unlimited devices. If budget is not a factor, NordVPN is the best VPN you can buy.

Speed Tests
We tested NordVPN from Oslo, Norway on a 500 Mbps fibre connection using the NordLynx protocol (their proprietary WireGuard implementation). Here are the results:
| Server Location | Download | Upload | Ping | Speed Loss |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Norway (local) | 488 Mbps | 245 Mbps | 4 ms | 2% |
| UK (London) | 465 Mbps | 220 Mbps | 28 ms | 7% |
| Germany (Frankfurt) | 475 Mbps | 230 Mbps | 22 ms | 5% |
| US East (New York) | 412 Mbps | 198 Mbps | 92 ms | 18% |
| US West (Los Angeles) | 365 Mbps | 170 Mbps | 152 ms | 27% |
| Japan (Tokyo) | 295 Mbps | 130 Mbps | 268 ms | 41% |
These are excellent results. On nearby servers (within Europe), NordVPN barely affects your speed. Even connecting to New York from Norway, you retain over 400 Mbps — more than enough for 4K streaming, large downloads, and video calls simultaneously.
NordLynx consistently outperformed standard WireGuard and OpenVPN in our tests. The proprietary double NAT system adds a privacy layer without measurable speed cost.

Privacy and Security
No-Logs Policy
NordVPN's no-logs policy has been independently verified by Deloitte in both 2023 and 2024. The auditors confirmed that NordVPN does not store connection timestamps, session durations, bandwidth usage, IP addresses, or browsing data.
Beyond audits, NordVPN passed a real-world test. In 2022, servers were seized by authorities and no user data was recovered. This is the strongest possible validation of a no-logs claim.
Jurisdiction
NordVPN is incorporated in Panama, which has no mandatory data retention laws and is not part of the Five Eyes, Nine Eyes, or Fourteen Eyes intelligence-sharing alliances. Panama has no legal framework to compel a VPN provider to log user data.
Encryption
NordVPN uses AES-256-GCM encryption with the NordLynx protocol. For OpenVPN connections, it uses AES-256-CBC with 4096-bit DH keys. Both are considered unbreakable by current and foreseeable computing technology.
Kill Switch
We tested the kill switch by forcibly terminating the VPN connection during active browsing, torrenting, and streaming. The kill switch activated within 200 milliseconds in every test, blocking all internet traffic until the VPN reconnected. No IP leaks were detected.
NordVPN offers two kill switch modes: an internet kill switch (blocks all traffic if VPN drops) and an app kill switch (closes specific apps if VPN drops). Both worked flawlessly.
DNS and WebRTC Leak Tests
We ran DNS leak tests on dnsleaktest.com and ipleak.net across 10 different servers. Zero DNS leaks detected. WebRTC leak protection is enabled by default in the browser extension and the desktop app. No WebRTC leaks detected.
Threat Protection Pro
This is NordVPN's standout feature and one of the main reasons to choose it over competitors. Threat Protection Pro works at the system level (not just in the browser) and blocks:
- Malicious websites and phishing attempts
- Ads and tracking scripts
- Malware downloads (scans files up to 20 MB)
This feature alone might justify the price difference between NordVPN and cheaper alternatives, especially if you do not run a separate ad blocker.
Streaming
NordVPN excels at streaming. We tested it against the following platforms in April 2026:
- Netflix US: Worked on first attempt, multiple servers
- Netflix UK: Worked on first attempt
- Netflix Japan: Worked after switching one server
- Disney+: Worked perfectly
- BBC iPlayer: Worked on first attempt
- Hulu: Worked on first attempt
- Amazon Prime Video: Worked on first attempt
- HBO Max: Worked on first attempt
The experience was nearly flawless. We used NordVPN for daily Netflix and Disney+ viewing for three months and only had to switch servers twice due to detection.
Torrenting
NordVPN provides dedicated P2P-optimised servers that are specifically tuned for torrent traffic. These servers support SOCKS5 proxy connections for torrent clients, which adds an extra layer of IP masking without the overhead of full VPN encryption.
Download speeds on P2P servers averaged 380 Mbps on European connections, which is among the fastest we have measured on any VPN. The kill switch ensures your real IP is never exposed if the connection drops mid-download.
NordVPN does not restrict or throttle torrent traffic on P2P servers. Some VPNs claim to allow torrenting but quietly deprioritise P2P traffic — NordVPN does not.
Apps and User Experience
Desktop (Windows and macOS)
The Windows and macOS apps share a similar design: an interactive map with server pins, a sidebar listing countries and specialty servers, and quick-connect buttons for recently used locations. The interface is clean and intuitive. Settings are well organised with sensible defaults.
One minor complaint: the map is flashy but not particularly useful. Most users will use the sidebar or quick-connect. The map is a visual gimmick that takes up screen space.
Mobile (iOS and Android)
The mobile apps mirror the desktop experience with a streamlined interface. One-tap connect works well. The iOS app supports IKEv2 and NordLynx protocols. The Android app adds OpenVPN as an option. Both support the kill switch and auto-connect on untrusted networks.
Linux
The Linux app is command-line only. There is no GUI, which is disappointing for a VPN at this price point. Surfshark and ExpressVPN both offer Linux GUIs. If you are a Linux user who wants a graphical interface, this is a legitimate reason to consider a competitor.
Browser Extensions
NordVPN offers Chrome and Firefox extensions that function as lightweight proxies. They encrypt browser traffic only (not system-wide) and include the ad/tracker blocker. Useful for quick location switching without affecting other applications.
Pricing
| Plan | Price | Total Cost | Devices |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 month | $12.99/mo | $12.99 | 10 |
| 1 year (Standard) | $4.99/mo | $59.88 | 10 |
| 2 years (Standard) | $3.49/mo | $83.76 | 10 |
| 2 years (Plus) | $4.49/mo | $107.76 | 10 |
| 2 years (Complete) | $5.99/mo | $143.76 | 10 |
The Standard plan includes the VPN and Threat Protection Pro. The Plus plan adds a password manager (NordPass) and data breach scanner. The Complete plan adds encrypted cloud storage (NordLocker) with 1 TB of space.
For most users, the Standard 2-year plan at $3.49 per month is the best value. The Plus plan is worth considering if you need a password manager — bundling NordPass saves money compared to buying it separately. For our take on NordPass, see our separate review.
All plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee that NordVPN actually honours without hassle. We tested it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is NordVPN safe to use?
Yes. NordVPN uses AES-256 encryption, has a verified no-logs policy backed by two independent Deloitte audits, operates under Panama jurisdiction (no data retention laws), and runs RAM-only servers that cannot store persistent data. It is one of the most thoroughly vetted VPNs in existence.
Does NordVPN work with Netflix?
Yes. In our April 2026 tests, NordVPN unblocked Netflix in the US, UK, and Japan. It also worked with Disney+, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO Max. SmartPlay technology handles the DNS routing automatically.
Is NordVPN worth the price?
If you can afford it, yes. At $3.49 per month on the two-year plan, NordVPN is not the cheapest option (Surfshark is $2.29/mo), but you get faster speeds, more servers, Threat Protection Pro, and the most comprehensive feature set of any consumer VPN. The price difference over two years is about $29, which buys you a meaningfully better product.
Can NordVPN be tracked?
No VPN makes you completely untraceable, but NordVPN makes it extremely difficult. Their audited no-logs policy means there is nothing to hand over even if compelled. Double VPN routes traffic through two servers in different countries. Onion over VPN adds the Tor network on top of the VPN. For most threat models, NordVPN provides more than sufficient anonymity.
Does NordVPN slow down your internet?
Minimally. On nearby servers, we measured a 2-7% speed loss. On transatlantic connections, speed loss was 18-27%. On connections to Asia, 41%. These are among the lowest speed impacts of any VPN we have tested. For daily browsing, streaming, and downloading, you are unlikely to notice any difference.
How many devices can I use with NordVPN?
NordVPN allows 10 simultaneous connections on a single account. This was increased from 6 in late 2024. Ten devices is enough for most individuals but may fall short for large households. If you need unlimited devices, Surfshark is the better choice.
Final Verdict
NordVPN earns a strong recommendation in 2026. It is the fastest VPN we have tested, has the most robust privacy credentials, and Threat Protection Pro is a genuinely unique feature that adds real security value. The 10-device limit and higher price compared to Surfshark are the only meaningful drawbacks.
Score: 9.2/10
If NordVPN fits your budget, it is the best VPN you can buy. If budget is the primary concern, Surfshark gives you 90% of the experience at 65% of the cost.
