Two devices in this category are genuinely worth your attention, and unlike the rest of the cheap-hardware series they are not aimed at your data. They are aimed at you: a tracker that reports where you are, and a camera that records where you are. The tracker problem, and the fix that shipped
Bluetooth trackers work by being found. The tag itself has no GPS and no connection of its own; it broadcasts a signal, and any nearby phone in the manufacturer's network relays a location back to the owner. That crowd-sourced design is what makes a coin-sized tag able to find keys anywhere in a city — and it is exactly what makes one slipped into a bag able to follow a person.
Because the problem was structural, the fix had to be too, and it required competitors to cooperate. Apple and Google jointly developed an industry specification, Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers, and shipped support on both platforms in May 2024 — Apple in iOS 17.5, Google on Android 6.0 and later. What it does: if an unknown tracker is detected moving with you over time, your phone tells you, regardless of which platform the tracker is paired to. That cross-platform part is the whole point — before it, an Android user could be followed by an iPhone-ecosystem tag with no warning at all.

Hidden cameras
Camera modules are now small enough and cheap enough to disappear into a smoke detector, a plug adapter, a clock or an air purifier, and they are sold for a mix of legitimate and obviously illegitimate purposes. The realistic exposure for most people is short-term rentals, changing rooms and shared accommodation.
Detection is less magical than the apps suggest, but a systematic sweep is genuinely effective, because the physics constrains where a camera can be.
- Think about sightlines first. A camera has to see something worth seeing. Walk the room and ask what is aimed at the bed, the shower, the changing area. Anything positioned oddly for its supposed function is the thing to look at.
