It is a fair question that most antivirus marketing avoids: with modern operating systems shipping capable built-in protection, do you still need to pay for a separate suite? The honest answer is "it depends on you", and being clear about that saves money and false confidence.
The case against paying is real. Built-in protection on current operating systems performs well in independent tests and covers the basics for a cautious user who keeps software updated and avoids risky downloads. For that person, a paid suite may add little beyond features they will not use.

If you handle sensitive data, share a machine with less careful users, or simply want a single dashboard for the household, the convenience can justify the cost.
The deciding factors are your behaviour and your need for extras — not fear. The strongest protections are free: updates, scepticism toward links and attachments, and a password manager with two-factor authentication.
